First Annual Bellingham Chocolate Festival Set for June
Bellingham's First Annual Chocolate Festival will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 3 in the Grand Ballroom of the Best Western Lakeway Inn. The event currently has sponsorship opportunities available, as well as room for a few additional vendors.
Proceeds from the festival will benefit both the reconstruction of the Ferndale Boys and Girls Club, which was recently damaged by a fire, and help send selected area youth to Europe this summer as Student Ambassadors for the national People to People Student Ambassador Program. The event, sponsored by Stiegman's, a new charitable corporation based in Bellingham that seeks to grow resilient communities through youth empowerment, will feature a wide variety of gourmet chocolate treats and samples, live dance music performed by 'The Walrus,' a raffle and a silent auction.
Vendors will include Chocolate Necessities, Theo's Chocolates, Fallin' For Chocolate, Goit House, Rainydaykitchen and The Malt Shop, among others. The event is important for the community, said event organizer Karol Steigman.
"Each year in Whatcom and Skagit counties, about 40 Student Ambassadors travel, and many of their families struggle with independent fundraisers to cover the cost, often ending up borrowing money from home equity loans or digging into college savings," said Stiegman. "Steigman's would like to see Bellingham's Chocolate Festival build from a signature event this year into a citywide event that can assist all of these student fundraisers who are traveling for educational experience, credit or adventures into one community event."
Eventually, said Stiegman, the event may transform into a fundraiser for local nonprofits.
"With this in mind, we have decided to share our profits with the Ferndale Boys and Girls Club to help them rebuild their burned down facility," Stiegman said.
Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchased at the door, as well as at Key Bank in Ferndale and the Community Food Co-op in Bellingham. The Lakeway Inn is located at 714 Lakeway Drive in Bellingham. For more information on vending and sponsorship opportunities, call 360-733-1950.
