In Vintage shop, how Sweets it is
It's cupcakes and fashion at the House of Sweets, a new bakery in Delray Beach.
Dreamed up by Michelle Parparian, whose House of Vintage clothing boutique occupies the front of the store, the bakery featuring cupcakes and decorated cookies is run by her friend Amanda Watkins.
She has no formal baking training - "it's just Mother's kitchen and Grandma's genes," guiding her, Watkins said.
Along with the classic cupcakes - vanilla or chocolate cake with buttercream icings - there are a number of "specialty" cupcakes such as chocolate mint, Black Forest, caramel apple, peanut butter and chocolate and tiramisu. Fruit cupcakes include strawberry shortcake cupcakes, Key lime, peaches and cream and pumpkin pie.
A number of fillings and designs are available; almost all the special ones require at least 72 hours, if not a week's advance order.
Watkins also makes the "Tower of Cupcakes" cake - a favorite for showers and parties.
The cookies are old-fashioned chocolate or vanilla sugar cookies, decorated with royal icing and wrapped in cellophane for party favors.
There are more than 30 designs to choose from, or customers can bring in their own designs and have them made into cookies.
At the bakery plain cupcakes, brownies and basic cookies are available for purchase; most other items are custom orders.
Prices range from $1 for a regular-sized brownie to $1.75 for a plain cupcake, and $65 and up for a tower of cupcakes. Cookies are $3 to $8 each.
